| About Me

Those who can, do. Those who can't, write about it as if they could. Words to live by. Like books? Who doesn't? Aside from the illiterate, I mean. I love books: reading them, writing them, criticizing them, plagiarizing them . . . wait, not that last one. I am a writer and the New York Times best-selling author of 19 books (I think; actually I've lost count) including Bad Vs. Worse, The Escape Artists, and The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook series. I am an honors graduate of the University of Pennsylvania--and living proof that English majors aren't necessarily failures. My next book, This Green House, arrives in the fall. I have appeared as a survival expert on numerous TV shows/stations, including TODAY, MONTEL, ABC NEWS, CNN, the BBC, and many, many more. I even created my own show, based on the WORST-CASE series, for a while. It was canceled due to overwhelming popularity. I primarily write popular non-fiction and humor, but I have also worked in publishing, high tech, marketing, television, and communications.
I live in Philadelphia with my wife Christine and daughters Alexandra and Lena. My non-writing interests include fitness, reading, fingerpainting, politics, live music, knife fighting, travel, full-contact mah jong, cooking, film and (gasp) television. And yes, Jeremy Piven is related to me. He's my third cousin. And my butler. Here he comes now with my smoking jacket. Gotta go . . .
